Sports Alert: Capitals, the defending Stanley Cup champions, ousted from playoffs, losing Game 7 in double overtime to Hurricanes, 4-3

Washington blew a two-goal lead to Carolina on Wednesday night, and the Capitals' record in Game 7s at home fell to a dismal 3-9. Jordan Staal tied the game for the Hurricanes 2:56 into the third period, and Brock McGinn scored the game-winner 11:05 into the second overtime period. It is the first first-round exit by the Capitals since the 2013 playoffs, when they lost in Game 7 to the New York Rangers.
